Youth Sunday May 11
Our youth will lead worship on Sunday, May 11. They have been at work planning, writing and preparing for this special worship service. It is a time of spiritual growing for our youth to think about their faith and share it with the congregation. Please make every effort to support our youth by being in worship on Sunday May 11.
Graduates will be recognized and scholarship recipients will be announced.

LOCAL BENEVOLENCE FUND
The Session approved receiving an offering for a Local Benevolence Fund after each regular Communion Service beginning the first Sunday in May. Currently our Church provides some funds for United Community Ministries which provides services for the local Soup Kitchen and the homeless. However there are many times when the Church receives calls from local referral sources, such as the City of Rocky Mount, requesting assistance for a family or individual who has been screened for need. The request typically is for one-time financial aid to purchase medication, pay for gas for medical trips to Duke or UNC Memorial, or to help with a skyrocketing utility bill. Even though West Haven has a benevolence amount of $100 set aside for just such emergencies, this is not nearly enough to meet the mounting needs in the community during these difficult times. For those who are marginally employed, one illness resulting in a missed pay check, can mean the difference between paying the rent or putting food on the table. This collection will only be taken once per quarter, and your generosity will be greatly appreciated.

PENTECOST OFFERING
for Children at Risk, Youth, &
Young AdultsPlease join us on May 11, 2008, as we celebrate the Day of Pentecost Offering. On this day we join with Christians around the world to celebrate God's gift of the Holy Spirit to the church. We also receive the Pentecost Offering, which benefits children at risk, youth, and young adults. Remember that 40% of the Offering stays with our congregation for ministry with children at risk. The other 60% will support General Assembly ministries that advocate for children and provide leadership development opportunities for our youth and young adults. This year the portion of the offering that stays local will be given to our Boy Scout Troop #11 for a Campership. Please give generously for the lives of our youth.

Ushers and Greeters Needed
Our system of securing ushers and greeters depends on the volunteering of members through our annual Time and Talent Sheet during our fall Stewardship Campaign. Since we have a Session of 12 elders who serve also as Officer In Charge (OIC) once every 12 weeks, we would like 36 people for ushering duties and 12 greeters so that each person serves only one time per quarter (4 times a year). This year there were only 22 people to commit to usher, so each person will be assigned duties 6-7 times this year. We do have enough greeters.
What does an usher do?
Ushers should meet with the OIC for instruction by 10:40 am on Sunday.
Ushers should at all times make the guest feel at home by being courteous and friendly. You are one of the first people a worshiper sees on Sunday morning.
Ushers should be careful to seat Officers and older members of the church close to guests and new members. Encourage them to meet our guests, make them feel at home, and invite them to come again.
The ushers are responsible for taking the morning offering. You proceed to front when congregation stands to sing the Doxology. Ushers send the offering plates down every other row, so that 2 rows are passing a plate at the same time. The usher receives the plate as it arrives at the end of the pew.
The USHERS IN THE HOUSE OF THE LORD HAVE A BIG JOB. It is an HONOR and PRIVILEGE to SERVE the Lord in His house in which it is extremely important that you be courteous, friendly, and on your toes at all time.
"I would rather be a door keeper in the house of my God than dwell in tents of wickedness." Psalm 84.10
The ushers also help the officer-in-charge to clean up all litter out of the pews and under the cushions, replace hymnals and Bibles in racks and to close up the church and other buildings.
What does a Greeter do?
The greeters are the first person someone sees upon entering the sanctuary. As you greet worshipers, you are encouraged to ask how they are, offer help to the nursery, etc. They are encouraged to have their family stand and greet with them.
If for some reason you cannot serve on your particular Sunday, it is your responsibility to get someone to take your place and to notify the church office of the substitution.
Call the church office if you would like to serve the Lord in the ministry. It is a great way to see people and get to know our guests.

Cents-Ability is a small first step in the battle against hunger and poverty. Congregations invite every member — of all ages — to contribute a few cents at every meal. This simple act is an expression of thanks for what we have received. It is also a commitment to share with others in response to Jesus' command "You give them something to eat." When members bring their offerings to church on the appointed Sunday, all of those coins "make a joyful noise unto the Lord" as they are received and dedicated. These small acts of faithfulness can add up: One hundred persons in a congregation will contribute $180 a month at two |
cents a meal. Cents-Ability originated in 1976 as "Two-Cents-A-Meal," a project begun by Presbyterian Women to involve individuals and families in a corporate response to world hunger. Over the years, presbyteries have developed similar programs entitled Pennies for Hunger, Nickel-A-Meal, etc. Many of these programs benefit local hunger ministries as well as the national and international projects of the Presbyterian Hunger Program. (PHP).
Please remember your Pennies For Hunger Offering on Outreach Sundays.
